Update: Some very interesting findings. A breakthrough?

Hi guys,

Using the photography chart from Mako (thanks!) I was able to make some interesting findings. (I also noticed that Mako was using shutter speeds slower than what I was using, yet was getting very good VR results).

Seems the capability of the VR depends alot on the shutter speed used. Seems like the midrange speeds cause the most problems but at very low speed the VR really kicks in nicely.

At 200 mm - all handheld:

1) Using speeds 1/focal lenth and faster - VR not needed and does not add much (as expected)

2) Shutter speeds from about 1/40-1/100 - very hit or miss with the VR. Sometimes seems to help, often shots are better with VR off. Point & shoot camera gives generally better results. No idea why.

3) Shutter speeds slower than 1/40 - this is where the VR seems to shine. With VR off my shots looks like they were taken by someone in alcohol withdrawal. With VR ON the shots are very clear - I even went down to 1/5 and found this to be true. My shots at 1/5 are often as clear or more clear than at the 1/50 shutter speed. This amazes me.

So the VR is definately working on my lens, but just works much better at very low shutter speeds that I would not have normally even considered using and seems to have some issues and hit or miss success in the non-optimal mid speed ranges.

I will also say that at the slower shutter speeds that the shots are as good, and sometimes better than my point and shoot (plus are at higher resolution).

So it seems the VR works well, but works best at the very low shutter speeds.

Anyone else also experiencing this?

This might also explain why people have been having different levels of success with the VR.
I think I can finally sleep at night.
