Need service?

Like I said in my experience I get consistently less sharp images if I take immediately the picture than if I wait to settle in. The difference is not significant so If I have to catch a moment I don't wait. I have 2 VR lenses and Canon compact with IS. All behave similarly.

What VR lens? They may need servicee as they are designed to fully restart the VR process and re-center when the shutter release button is fully depressed. You could try the test I exampled to confirm they are or are not operating correctly. From your description, they seem to require service. There may also be a tendency to "push" as you go from half-press to full press. If the shutter speed is slow enough, that could cause the phenomenon your seeing. Good Luck
