K5 multiple exposure modes

This is a bit of a mystery to me.

There appears to be two modes, one called auto ev adjust. I haven't through experimentation or reading the one sentence in the manual managed to work out how these modes work.

According to the imaging resource review, you can use these modes to either:

1. Accumulate multiple exposures into one shot

2. Average multiple exposures into one shot

1. should in theory allow you to simulate say a 3 minute exposure with 6 30 sec shots combined automatically into the same shot

2. Should allow you to reduce noise by taking the same shot multiple times then averaging the random noise during blending.

All done in camera.

I haven't had a lot of luck trying this, all it seems to do is create interesting ghostly double exposures.

Can someone explain exactly how this mode works and what the settings really do amd whether it can be used as IR suggest?
