Thanks for the tips.

I was aware that I should not use OS/VR with a tripod. It is in my D90 manual, and also in the Sigma instructions (I’m the type that reads them!) I’ve already experimented handholding in the garden using OS, and it gave me some acceptable shots in lighting where that would have been impossible without. But I’m not convinced it gives the 4-stop improvement Sigma claim, or even as much as my Nikon AF-S DX VR 55-200/4-5.6G IF-ED. Already having this tiny Nikon telephoto is one of the reasons why I didn’t want to spend more on the Sigma 50-500, although I expected that its greater zoom range would mean worse performance. A monopod is something I have thought about getting for use with the lens, particularly if I want to use it to hunt butterflies.
