You are getting off to a good start but a few tips are needed. First with just one child in the "portrait" try shooting wide open, f2.8 if your lens will do it. That will throw out the background nicely. All of your images are f6.3 or more. Regarding background, image #1 & #2 need better backgrounds. Pay very close attention to this.

Image #5 you have your beautiful daughter turned at a 90 degree angle to the camera, revealing the entire upper arm under her chin. That is not a pleasing pose. Try to get your kids at around a 45 degree angle if you can. Straight on will work with kids but humans respond visually better to a 45 degree angle.

Most amateurs and even some pros shy away from flash outdoors because it is perceived to be difficult. Well it is and it isn't. Off camera is best but requires a hand held light meter and some additional knowledge unless you use a sync cord and can shoot TTL. Look into this. It will add a whole new dimension to your portrait work! A great blog to help you with this is:
