Re: Canon EF100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM vs. EF300mm f/4L IS USM

I have used the following lens on Safari (Tanzania/Kenya/India) where you cannot go offroad: (Generally out of every 1-shot near the car, 5 are out further away).

Sigma 100-300F4: My first safari lens when I could not afford the 100-400L. I used this in Tanzania in 2004 on 300D. I wished for more reach, also with 6MB files from this body cropping is difficult.

Canon 100-400L: In my view the most versatile Canon safari lens. I would use it with a bean bag especially in the mornings/evenings.

Canon 70-300L: I replaced the above with this because I wanted a more lighter lens that can also be used at home in UK (parks/bike-riding/kids). With more MP, you can crop and still get decent images.

Regarding the 300mmF4IS, I would rather go for the 100-400L for safari because of versatility (zoom) and greater reach.

As one poster said, also consider 70-300L and 500F4IS (rented) as an option - I am thinking of exactly this for my next safari (or 300mmf2.8 + 1.4TC).
