This is not a fair comparison. At 1/80 second, it is hard to capture moving human body. You need 1/200 to get a sharp shoot.

I moved from Canon to Nikon as well. I used canon 17-55 f/2.8 IS with 40D. I did not notice any sharpness different between it and my current Nikon 24-120 f/4. Maybe because I am using crop body only.

I found a light way prime 35mm (50mm equivalent on FF body) is a better choice than investing on a HEAVY f/2.8 zoom lens. Right now, I often only carry D7000 with 35mm f/1.8.
