There's less noise in the jpeg but also less detail/sharpness. It would be nice to see if you can get rid of the noise in the sky (in the RAW captures of course) and retain the detail.

Yeah, you 've got it right.

That's what i'm thinking about. There might be more NR tools in the Gimp, and more versatile than in the Camera's NR filter or in the adjustment the Raw Converter features...

There is a specific new noise filter for reducing sensor noise at high ISO in the FX-Foundry bundle for example... anyway this is chroma noise, and the best tools i know are Descreen or wavlet-denoise, beside of Greycstoration etc, they grasp most size-related noise rather than chroma noise ! needs to be further investigated.
