50mm vs 85mm on a DX body

I've read a lot about the fast 85 mm primes being optimal choices for potrait photography, but I'm wondering if the 85 mm 1.4 lenses (even the cheaper Sigma copy) are worth the extraordinary price tags?

Considering that one can purchase a Sigma 50 1.4 or Nikon 50 1.4 for less than $500, is it really worth the money to pick up an 85 1.4....unless money isn't an object, of course.

Obviously, with the 85 1.8 coming out, that will give folks a much cheaper option (especially those that are using bodies without the internal focus motor), but if you already have a 50 1.4 and a good copy at that, will it even be worth it to swap that lense out for the new 85 1.8?

Just looking for some general thoughts/opinions from the more experienced members on the board. Thanks
