You MIGHT be OK, but then again....

Look at it this way, if it's raining hard enough to worry about the camera, then you have to worry about water on the front surface of the lens (unless you're going for that dreamy water look).

Unless you want to spend your time attempting to dry off the lens in the rain you should invest in some sort of protection - even if it's a plastic bag or an umbrella. Cameras are water RESISTANT not water PROOF and none of the DSLRs I'm aware of are advertised to pass one of the many specific specifications for water resistance. I've had cameras survive for hours in the rain (the D100 and D2x) and cameras that crapped out in moderate rain (D700). It's pretty much a crap shoot, so the best advice is to keep it dry.
