Maybe you have the DR set, I found out that the velvia and DR would make the shadows a bit too much for some reason (one would expect oposite)

But I like the velvia colors, even more since anything printed in the big chain stores still look like s* t. Even if you put screaming colors, what you get printed back is some muddy puddle.

i was just playing around and compared a few shots. the biggest issue i see with out of the camera velvia is the shadows, details are lost in there.
