Yes I have considered it...and I've heard they are just as good as any other flash from Nikon.

The reason I consider a Nikon one is because If I buy a DSLR as a second body, I know I will chose a Nikon one. So I thought about interoperability between my M and My future Nikon!

For awhile I had both a Canon and Leica kit, and the 580EX II worked great on the Leica, but the the version II's weatherproofing actually caused it to mount oddly with Leica's shoe. I eventually sold the Canon kit and the flashes with it; although, I kept the 580s and an ST-E2 around for a little while because I surprisingly could still use the wireless functionality with the Leica.

Anyway, for you, it'd probably make sense to find newer Nikon strobes if you're planning on getting into a Nikon body, but for me, I picked up some older Nikon SB-24s very inexpensively and they work fantastically--sometimes better than the 580s did much to my surprise.
