Hi guys,

I've been lurking for awhile. Mostly been taking lots of pictures with my d80 and a 50mm 1.8 prime lens. This weekend I rented a nikkor 16-85mm. Nice lens.

I did notice however that on pictures where I am using the onboard flash, I am getting a shadow which I believe is being cast by the barrel of the lens when I am at the wide end of the range. It appears centered and at the bottom edge of the picture.

Is this typical? Is it because I am now using a longer lens barrel and should use a speed light instead of the onboard flash?

I'm guessing because the onboard flash is low down and close to the camera body that this is happening.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Dave G.

This is very typical of longer lenses when used with the on-board flash. You will need to use a Speed light/Dedicated Flash or off camera flash with a lens like that.

Very typical at the wide end with the Pop-up flash....taking the lens hood off might help.

Cool, thanks guys for the response.

A speedlight is on my wish list. Just gotta pick up some OT.
