Handing a camera to a stranger to take your picture

Say you're on a vacation. You have non-photographer friends with you. Do you just hand your camera (let's just say it's a D5100) to them and say "would you take our picture" assuming they even know how to press the shutter?

I did that recently. The older guy kept peering at the LCD, like it was a point and shoot. He had no clue whatsoever how to take a pic with a DSLR. Telling him to look through the viewfinder was no help as he didn't know what a viewfinder was or where it was. He managed to press every button on the camera (exaggerating) before he found the shutter.

Not his fault, really, more my fault. So...how many of you set up Live View before handing your camera to somebody. And how much explaining do you do when you hand it to them? Just askin'.

Nikon D5100
