If your budget allows it I'd return the 1.8 for the 1.4. From what I've read here and elsewhere it is a faster focusing lens. The 85mm 1.8 might even be a better bet for basketball in a gym.

I use the 50mm 1.8 stopped down to 2.2 to 2.8 for karate at 1/400 to 1/500 sec. I'm at ISO 1600 and sometimes 3200 with my 500D.

Is there noise? Yes. Can you catch continuous action any other way? No.

The 60d should give you better ISO capabilities and a faster frame rate which will help catch the perfect shot.
