Low light action/sports (old 405d/XSi + Tamron 24-270)

Hi,

I have an old 450D and recently got a Tamron 18-270 PZD. I'm using the 450D so I'm forced to learn basic photography skills. Eventually I'll upgrade to something better, but first I want to get the basics right.

Here's an example I took today, my daughter is in a school basketball team and scored her first points today

Here's an example of a shot (before/after Lightroom):

I had it on continuous burst, servo focus and standard WB. I used Lightroom to reduce noise, increase brightness and crop on the second image.

During the game, I tried to use ISO 400, but it was just too dark. When I used ISO 1600 it had a lot of noise (Even 800 has a lot of noise). I tried decreasing the shutter speed but the action became a blur. The school don't allow a flash during the games.

What tips would you suggest to improve this kind of shot?

I appreciate any advice or guidance you can give.

Canon EOS 450D (EOS Rebel XSi / EOS Kiss X2)
