Hi,

I took shots of a basketball - sorry it is just a Spalding
Took the 3 best shots of
1) canon sx130
2) D5100 with VR OFF
3) D510 with VR ON

(all shots except a few of the Nikons were at 1/40 handheld - some of the Nikons were at 1/80)

-Unforutately the sun was popping in and out from behind the clouds so the amount of light does vary from shot to shot.

Conclusion:

1) The canon easily produces images that are much sharper - without much concentration at all - the shots just look good with ease.

2) The VR does not seem to add much at all to the D5100 - the 2 best shots I took were with the VR off - it suggests to me that there is some defect in its mechanism that is adding movement when it should not be there or is not compensating the way it should. These are the best shots I could get, and there were about 3x as many that were not even presentable. For comparison, for the canon, I only took 5 shots to get the 3 you see below.

See shots below.

Nikon VR OFF 1

Nikon VR ON 1

1st, if these are hand held then your hand holding techniques have improved greatly.

2nd. I checked EXIF and VR is on or off as labeled....with that said, I think your lens is broke. The VR "on" shots should not be consistently more blurred at 1/40s than the VR "off" shots. With no glass between you and the target in good light...I'm pretty certain. That's my honest take. You did a very nice job comparing here.
