The Digital Picture's lens comparing tool shows a lot of what people are saying about the limitations of the superzooms. Too bad they didn't shoot the 70-200L f4 IS on the same crop sensor as the EF-S 18-200. But using how they did shoot these two lenses shows the two ends of the spectrum. There is a noticeable improvement in the center on the 70-200 and tremendous improvements in the middle and corners compared to the 18-200.


I started with a Sigma 18-200 OS (the Canon hadn't been released yet) and noticed the image was soft at 200mm especially when I had to crop a lot. I eventually replaced it with a 17-55 and a 70-200L f4 IS and the results are significantly better.
