Not sure how you do your sharpening, but one suggestion I find works for me is to apply your sharpening on a seperate layer - that allows you to easily apply it only where it's needed or wanted. Areas like blue sky can be left alone.

The one thing I'd suggest to look out for is the white halo outline around the subject. Again if you apply sharpening in a seperate layer, it's quite easy to simply erase out the white halo around the subject - you wouldn't even really need less sharpening as the birds themselves have good detail - the white outlines are the only thing that throws it off and makes it look oversharp.

If you already do sharpen in layers, then ignore my post - just offering some help in case you don't!
