Get an inexpensive fast prime right now

.

I'd agree with the suggestion to pick up a 35 1.8G and/or 50 1.8D/G now, and then get the 85 1.8G later if you feel you still need something longer.

You can get very good shots with the kit lens, especially if you know how to use flash well, but flash can be disruptive and blows your chance for candid photography. Plus, you don't really have the option of very much subject isolation wit the kit, and your shutter speeds are restricted if you don't want to use flash. I agree with your instinct to seek a fast prime.

I ended up with the 35 1.8G, 50 1.8D and 85 1.8D, and used them all. They are all very good lenses for the price and are fun to own and shoot for any reason, not just kid captures and portaiture.
