Hi everyone,

This may be a little sudden, but I'm giving real serious consideration to getting the Canon 1Ds. I use to own the 1D before but sold it because certain S2 features really attracted me to in. But now I think I really miss the feel of the 1D/1Ds/1V body. Plus for the type of photography I like to do (mostly landscape) the full sensor is a real plus. I also live in Seattle and I just love to go out in the rain and take pictures...which I really can't do anymore with the S2. Since the 1Ds is environmentally sealed, it'll allow me to persue that aspect of photography again. The 11 MP really doesn't have that much attraction for me. As I was mentioning to CrazyIvan, I think I'm gonna lose a lot of sleep over this decision. Cany anyone out there convince me to stay with the S2, please!

You don't have to give me the lenses. I'll just take the body.

Oh yeah, can I also get a 20x30 print that one nature water thingie?

Come on buddy! You can't bail on us! :-)

The biggest pluses it seems are the sealed camera and the full frame sensor. To me, being in Seattle, the sealed camera is probably the biggest of the two. I think the problem is that we are in winter and we have a lot of rain right now.

The question is whether it's worth the $8K plus lenses and any loss on the Nikon lenses.

The shots and prints I've seen of yours are breathtaking, and I don't know if there'd be a $5K improvement in the pics with the 1Ds, but there are hardware pluses that we've noted.

To me, I think the 1Ds is an incredible camera if you can earn the cost back in photo sales. For an advanced hobbyist or serious amateur, I personally think it's price tag is a little too high.

If you do get one though, I'd love to take it for a spin. :-)

Hi bud,

What are you doing still up? Opening presents probably :-)

What you say makes a lot of sense, but I've been going through the plusses and minuses of the both the S2 and 1Ds over and over and over again in my mind. I'm literally losing sleep over it already. The price tag is huge, but I honestly think that if (and that's a HUGE if) I do go with the 1Ds than I'll have it for a lot longer than the S2. As I wrote initially, I'm quite happy with the 6 MP printouts...extatic, in fact so it's not the 11 MP that attracts me to the Canon camera. The build quality and the full sensor is the rub, I feel. As far as I'm concerned, megapixels be damned! Can you feel my pain, bud? I LOVE my S2, but...

I know someone who may be interested in selling one to you. He is disappointed in the CA in his wide angle shots and doesn't feel the resolution increase over the D60 is what it is supposed to be. Speculation is that CA is holding up the 14N. And that CAnon can't fix theirs so they are looking at a lens solution. This guy is no slouch; he owns a stock agency and has been published numerous times in his field. If you are serious and interested, email me off-forum and I wll put you in touch with him. IMHO the Fuji is a better choice for the money. It's color is great and it seems to put out more like 8mp than 6. It just can't do the wide angle that the 1DS can (or can it?) do. BTW is the 1Ds sensor sealed or just the rest of the body? Oh yes, I also know an S1 user who might upgrade to an S2. And no I am not a camera broker!

I hear ya man. When I held the cam at Glazers the other week, it felt pretty sweet and the smoothness of the shutter release was like butta! Trust me, I know about losing sleep...That's what happened to me when I made the decision between the D100 and S2 (not sure why it was so tough now that I've had the S2 for a while) :-).

I say wait until after the 1st and then I'll treck with you over to Glazers and then we can play with the 1Ds and go through the pluses and minuses...That's if you want a second opinion there.

BTW...We finished opening gifts a bit ago, and I just thought I'd drop in. Got the 1228 tonight...Pretty sweet tripod. It's really weird, it's super light when all folded up, and when you open it up fully, it feels even lighter because the weight is distributed.

Anyway, let me know if you'd like to go to Glazers and dig through the 1Ds.

Thanks, Rick. I'll send you an e-mail in a few minutes. The sensor is sealed IF you use certain L Canon lenses such as the 24-70 f2.8 L, otherwise it isn't. Thanks for the post, bud.

I think it's a great idea to go to Glazers again and "look" at the 1Ds. I'm sure that'll clinch it one way or the other. Are you gonna be in town this weekend? Maybe we can swing by the place on Saturday if you're free.

So you got the 1228, huh? Lucky b@stard! :-) Now you're all set man!

I went to Home Depot and bought some Thompson's Water Seal. My friend air brushed my S2 pretty good.

The only problem is that my compact flash door is sealed shut. You should leave a 1GB in there. Same thing with the onboard flash, also sealed shut.

Mahesh, you are getting to close to those xray machines.

Hi Mahesh,

If like me you own the S2 because of the output, then the 1Ds is not going to help. The only problem I see here is the S2 not being a sealed unit, look on the photography market for a protective camera cover, or some other clever device to shield your S2 against the elements. There are allsorts of wierd and wonderful things out there, find one that suits and carry on shooting.

I wish the S2 had the build of the D1x, although the S2 is rugged its just not to the standard of the F100/F5. I wouldn't go and buy a camera just for build quality, not over the S2 anyway. I like the images from my S2, the look an feel of them is outstanding. If you prefer the images from the 1Ds then prehaps you should investigate.

Good Luck
Wish you and yours well over the holiday season

Simon

Hello, First of all , I have seen really great pics from you and glad you love photography, I am a proffessional who is semi working and I two would love the camera, but do I really need it right now and can I afford the price. Also what camera will nikon come out with???? When I upgrade, I want to have all the choices availiable to me. For now the S2 is making money for me. The technology is fast paced, I want the lastest and gratest too but will wait to see all the choices availiable for me style.

Dont let anyyone talk you out of getting what you want, and if you upgrade im sure it will be the right decision for you. just my 2 cents
