Oahu's North Shore with ZS7/LX5

In mid-December my son and I headed to Oahu for some warm-water surfing (our water at home is 55 degrees) and in hopes of seeing, in person, some of the famed North Shore winter surf. We were lucky enough to hit it perfectly for some epic surf at the famous Banzai Pipeline.

Since we wanted to bring only carry-on luggage, the ZS7 and LX3 combination (along with my waterproof TS1) were the perfect combination. For the Pipeline, the ZS7 was the camera of choice, since the LX5 lacked the needed zoom, and I think it did pretty well. The movies, played back on a large screen TV, are really good quality for such a tiny camera, and bring out things that stills can't quite get. Here are a few of the stills.

and one from the LX5, which shows one of the most-appreciated things we saw:

(the unspoiled beaches of the North Shore, where you can go see (or ride) world-class waves, toss down a towel and watch and enjoy. No sales pitches for junk souvenirs or junk food, no VIP seats, nobody fencing off their "private" seating area, just folks enjoying and supporting those willing to tackle these amazing waves. We were very lucky to hit Pipeline at this time...it's not like this all the time, not even every year.

The LX5 and ZS7 were a pleasure to travel with; not obtrusive, never awkward to carry, just there to do what they were made for without getting in the way.
