get 50 1.4G now, and when 85 1.8 G is on the market, you could evaluate if you need it or not. I started my photo journey when my daughter was born, now she is 7 years old. The lenses I used were : 50 1.4G, 28-70 2.8, 24-70 2.8G, 70-300 VR(sold), and 70-200 VR2.

For a 13-month old son, you might need a zoom lens, if not, then 50 1.4G is enough. When he is walking around later, you might need 24-70 2.8G. My camera is D700, your D90 has 1.5 factor on lenses, so should be long enough. I recommend you get a 24-70 2.8G, because when he walks and turn his head smiling to you, it's too late to "walk" to a proper position and take pictures. I join a photo club, almost everyone (amateur) use a zoom lens for toddlers.
