Unfortunately, no matter which 85mm f/1.8 lens you end up with, you'll still be able to blame your bad results on the lens, since it won't be the 85mm f/1.4 du jour (or a Canon 85mm f/1.2L).

In my opinion, the top causes of "ugly" shots of young children are bad lighting and bad shooting angles. Background junk is a distant third at best.
