I have a D7K, and some days ago i tried a Canon 60D with the 18-135 IS... and certainly the IS stabilization in Canon is better than VR in Nikon. I could get sharp images at 135mm 1/80s, while in Nikon i had to increase speed to 1/160s-1/200s (18-105VR), for getting sharp images. Certainly, i'm a bit disappointed too. In the D7K, the problem is worse due to mirror slap.

Seems strange but there does seem to be wide variation in the 18-105. I normally have no trouble staying sharp 1/30s in the middle to wide end and 1/60s in the longer end. Mirror slap isn't really a problem hand held as the hand dampens the motion. Tripod you do need to watch it around 1/15s to 1/60s. A solid tripod or hung weight helps greatly...just using d11 or quiet mode can have a great impact.

Demo for mirror slap comparison (heavy crop 100%):
