Usually, yes, but rarely with any objective testing. I did test focus speed with kit zooms between my wife's Nikon D5100 an my NEX-5. In good light, and somewhat low light, the NEX was actually a slight bit faster on average to obtain focus lock (this was tested by turning on the focus lock beep and comparing times to switch between focus on close items and distant ones).

In darkness or near-darkness, though, the D5100 won. Its AF assist light is much brighter. The difference there wasn't so much fast or slow; rather it was reasonably fast (for the D5100) versus never (for the NEX).
