Re: Visiting Big Island, Hawaii...any advice?

Any advice about some "secret places" I should explore? I'll be there for 5 days with my wife. Thanks in advance for any and all suggestions.

Shoot in RAW because memory is cheap, but memories are priceless.

I spent a 1 week on Big Island and 1 week on Maui with my wife in Nov 2010. We liked Big Island a lot, it's less crowded and less commercialized than Maui.

I ditto trip to Mauna Kea summit and walk to the place where lava flows into the ocean. Both places are far from "secret", but I think they both are a must.

We stayed in beautiful Mauna Lani resort on Kona site, but If we go again, we would spent couple of nights closer to the volcano area on the east site – it’s not a fun to drive 100 miles during the night after 10 miles hike in the dark.
Rent SUV, and make sure it’s 4WD, not all of them are.

If you like snorkeling as we do, this book is absolutely fantastic:

Snorkel Hawaii: The Big Island Guide to the Beaches and Snorkeling of Hawaii

Using this book we found nice beach very close to our hotel when the water was rough everywhere else.

Btw, you don’t need expensive waterproof housing for snorkeling if you have P&S. These pictures were
taken by my wife’s tiny Canon in this $20 bag:

I'm sure you will have a great trip and we all will as usually enjoy your pictures.
