I wouldn't advise making assumptions

The P7100 was an unusual case - the P7000 was so slow that we could safely conclude that even a pre-production P7100 was faster.

In most cases, you can't tell how it's going to behave. If it's amazingly fast, you can conclude it's not going to get any slower before production, so you can safely say something. If it's simply around the level of other cameras on the market, you can't tell whether it's going to improve.

And with regards Phase Detection/Contrast Detection, some of the fastest focusing cameras on the market at present (when using kit zoom lenses) are CDAF-based. The challenge for CDAF is continuous and predictive focus, but in performing a single AF acquisition, there are CDAF systems that outpace the current PDAF ones.
