best lens for low light filiming

Hey,

Im going to new york next week and thinking of renting a lens. I've got the Canon 600D with the 18-55mm stock lens. (rubbish in low light video recording)

(want to take a lot of video)

I'm mainly going to be shooting around the city, can anyone recommend any good lenses i should check out?

I will be doing video both during the day and night. So need something with a low aperture (i think? still new too this)

I've been looking at the canon EF 50 mm f/1.8 II Lens, does this perform well in low light?

Canon EOS 600D (EOS Rebel T3i / EOS Kiss X5)
