Re: the newish i1 Display Pro got some good marks at Dry Creek

for under $100 I've been happy with a Pantone HUEY PRO I have. It makes a huge improvemnt in what you are seeing.

I also have a SpectraViewII Colorimeter and Software I got with a NEC monitor, but it depends on how good your monitor is to how much you need to spend.
