Re: SX30 IS -or- SX40 HS

Hi Lilly,

I have both the SX30 and the SX40. As you know, the SX40 is the newer model of the same camera. The lens is identical on both and the body pretty much identical also. What is really different between the two cameras is that the SX40 has a much better sensor and the newer DIGIC 5 processor. The SX40 uses a new BSI-CMOS sensor which gives not only better resolution, but considerable better higher ISO performance as well. Pictures from my SX40 consistencly look better than those from the older SX30.

Another thing that is very noticable is that on the SX30, you see considerable chromatic aberation and distortion on edges of the photos particularly at the wide end. This CA and distortioon are corrected in camera on the SX40 and is no longer there.

If you can afford the differnce in cost, the SX40 is the better camera and you will be happier with it. Now of course you can get decent pictures from the SX30, but after owning and using both, I can tell you the SX40 is considerably better.

I am looking to get a new camera. I really like what both of these cameras offer, I am just torn on which one I should get. I will be shooting lots of animal photography along with big open space area's, and night photography, oh and video~that will be a big thing too.

Help!
