Sony G lens Poll and discussion

Remember, this is not a Minolta lens; the white ones are leftovers from a defunct company that sony bought. Those lenses were good but a new company is trying to make its mark.
--yeah those lenses were good considering a used 20 year old Minolta 300mm APO G 2.8 is going for 3500.00 dollars right now and a used Minolta 600 mm f/4 is going for 6000.00 dollars..

at $100 extra cost. Problem solved!

I actually like the color of the 70-400G, I would´t mind this one coming in the same tone; nor do I mind it not looking like a Canon L. What is more important though, is how it performs under sunshine. IMO, that silver finish is just fine for that.

I'm happy with the way the 70400G looks. Black absorbs too much heat.

If temperature is such an issue why did Sony not make titanium coloured cameras to deal with the overheating in video shooting. It would match up with this beast of a lens.
With the impending release, this year , of the New Sony 500 f/4.5 SSM G it seems it might just be Silver in color, which completely turns me off.. I have both G series tele converters, an investment of 1000 dollars, and they are white.. While I have been excited about a Sony 500mm f/4.5 lens, I would never purchase a silver one.. So Now Sony has G lenses in white, black and silver.. So here is the poll.. What color do you like the best for Sony's best glass. White, Black or Silver. If you had the money for this new lens, would color be an issue?

... for radiating heat away from something that gets warm from the inside , just like the imaging sensor in a DSLR/T shooting lengthy video.
Read here for example:

IIRC, if there are elements inside a lens that could get warm, it may be the AF motor and/or the OIS element drivers. From what is available on the market, this seems no cooling issue, so lens colors are driven by the mix of lens housing materials, their respective thermal flex characteristics and the optical specifications to prevent exterior heat exposure to have an effect.

Some long Nikon lenses come in black. The price to pay there may be more weight as the designers chose flex-resistant designs either by material (more metal instead of composites for example?) or thicker lens housings (again adding weight).

Colour is not an issue for me but if I had a choice it would be black. I think white is for posers!

Whenever I go to a wildlife centre all the Canon shooters with long white lenses have had to buy camouflage covers for their white lenses to cover them up.

The fact a TC was not of the same colour would not stop me buying a lens. The price of the 500mm primes would which is why I went for the 500mm mirror.

My 70-300g and 500mm mirror are both black of course and I an pleased about that.

Wait. Bill, you paid a thousand dollars for a couple of teleconverters? Seriously? Why. A thousand dollars for TCs is insanity especially when the Kenko Pro series cost $200 a pop.

--I have the Kenkos, they are Not G glass, and they dont work on my Minolta 80-200 F/2.8 APO. The Sony's are G glass, and work perfectly. They also match my 70-200 SSM G 2.8.

As far as a black metal lens no matter what the material, we are not talking plastic here. Just go to a parking lot in a 95F/ 35C day and put your hand on the roof of a white car and a black car you see a big difference in the temp.

IN the summer on a black top road with ambient temps in the 90's, road surface temps can reach to 140 F. its the reason your tire presure can go up by ten psi.

I we are talking heat .. and weight, they should have made the lens out of glass filled nylon, like many intake manifolds found in high end sports cars, stronger and lighter than than aluminum... much cheaper than titanium, and its bullet proof. And there are no expansion contraction issues.

BTW IM ok with the silver on a Black Camera, But I would prefer white because its cooler to the touch and would match my 70-200 G .and the TC's. BTW when buying a car ( which I know this isnt) color is a big part of the buying experience.

In a perfect world, I'd probably prefer white - for much the same reason as you - I have Minolta G TCs which are white and match my 300mm F4 - so I'd likely use the same on the 500.

However, if I had a choice of buying a white one at x price, or another color at a 25% discount, I'd take the other color. If it saves money, I'd take the ugliest lens color they could make - I'd take a Pepto-Bismol pink with mustard yellow polka dots, if it saved me a few thou!
