I've had my VC version for just over a year and concur it offers great image quality, very sharp across the range and certainly not 'mush' as one poster on here has said. I've also found the VC system to be very effective. There are some cons though as follows:

plastic build - I know even many of Nikon's pro lenses have a fair bit of plastic in them these days but i preferred it when lenses were solid metal - would prefer that even if it increased the weight of the lens.

af - ok in most situations but hunting and noisy af in some situations unacceptable. Also no full time manual override

Barrel distorition - a little in some situations but I hear that even Nikon's 24-70 exhibits some, so acceptable

Despite the criticisms above I would recommend the lens. If Nikon update theirs with VR that might be a different story, though such a lens would cost north of £1000.
