I am talking about daylight conditions or under well lit stadia. Normally I will track the player for a second before i press the shutter to give the AF the chance to properly commence tracking.

That depends entirely on what you're shooting and the conditions you're shooting in.

Shoot on a basketball court that is backlit with soft fluorescent lights like I do and you'll be happy with every other shot being in focus. That's what I get with both my Mark III and Mark IV. The combination of fast action in dim, low contrast backlight putting your subject in shadow is simply the worst possible conditions to focus in.
