Wow, i seem to have stirred up a hornet's nest...

The DxOmark tests of the NEX-7 do place it in the same category as many medium format digital systems, but another factor here is color gamut. The NEX-7 records 12-bit RAWs (68 billion colors) while the MFDs (usually) record 16-bit RAWs (281 trillion colors) and while either one is more than the eye can see, 16-bit is a much bigger box of crayons.

Regardless, I have worked with DSLR, MFD, and now NEX-7 RAW files. I am seeing similarities and differences, but the NEX-7 is doing some things that were squarely MFD territory a few years ago. Should MFD makers feel threatened? Only if they have been sitting on their laurels. Those who have moved up and on will do fine. I feel the Pentax 645D is a more credible threat to them anyway. And if Pentax brings out their rumored Medium Format Mirrorless at Photokina '12, that's where the real shakeup is going to be.
Don't anthropomorphize digital cameras. They don't like it.
