I had exactly the same problem with my IXUS 220HS (ELPH 300HS). The ON/OFF button has no time delay and is easy to operate accidentally.

I cured it by making a 5 mm hole in a piece of self adhesive foam and cutting it to surround the ON/OFF button.

It now requires a deliberate action to turn the camera on.
