I'm a graduate student working in a neuro radiology lab and my boss has asked me to research high quality large format printers(probably 13x19). I'm also an enthusiast photographer and have the ulterior motive of getting one that is great for my prints(I really like black and white, but color is good too). I don't think that I need pigment.

Unless you go with something like a Canon Pro 9500 you are going to need two printers. One for black and white and another for color.

One priority is to have easy access to ink refills. Our pigment based HP 9180 is very difficult to get ink for, and I cannot find any locally. So availability of ink and cost effectiveness are both quite important.

The best bet is purchase ink in 4 oz or 100ml bottles and a set of refillable cartridges. Your operating costs go WAY WAY down but there are trade-offs. Such as the need to profile your ink/paper combinations when printing color.

I think we would be wanting something in the 500-600 dollar range. What is a cost effective printer in this range? I would prefer something with three monochrome inks as I could replace them myself when using them for my own work and not cost the lab.

Take a look at Black and White printing on the Epson 1400 over at .

You can purchase the black and white inks with cartridges and interchange between color and black and white. Get a bottle PeizoFlush and a set of carts to clean the printer between changing out the color and black and white inks. You can get dye inks and carts at .

The 1400 is only a little over $200 and a good choice. for the price range you can have printer, color ink and carts, black and white ink and carts and a set of cleaning carts with money to spare.
