Best Way to shoot dark color art work?

Some of the art I am asked about photographing is dark moody imagery with very limited color range but all on the dark to nearly black coloring. Several love dark moody blue shades or intense shades of red. A few go to the opposite extreme of bright colors (yellows and greens) with almost no darker shades. What lighting and printing styles go with such dark imagery, especially if final prints are wanted for a sample catalog? The digital prints of blue mixes that I have seen fail miserably at reproducing anything close to the original image. The wrong paper, wrong contrasts, wrong colors.
