Is my flash faulty?

Hi there,

I have a Canon EOS 500D and have been using a Tamron 18-270mm lens. My Flash is a non Canon lens that I've had for around 3 and a half years and has always served me well (it's a Jessops branded lens for those in the UK).

To date, not issues with the flash. I normally use Av mode, but when using a flash I tend to use Tv mode with the shutter speed set to between 1/50 and 1/100.

This normally works fine however over the past week or two I've noticed that after the flash is first charged the first shot is massively over-exposed and subsequent shots are OK. Also the flash tends to go to sleep mode much quicker than I seem to remember it doing before.

Can anyone think of a reason why (other than a faulty flash) this may happen? The lens is also relatively new so was wondering if the TTL may not be working quite right... however I assume that the camera works all that out and sends it to the flash unit - but I'm guessing now...

Thanks

James
