85 / 1.8 -- no question.

Currently I do not own a lens that is very suitable for low light photography. I think what I would really like is a fast prime. Also, I would prefer that the lens be suitable for portraiture, as it does interest me.

I would like to stay below 350 (US dollars). I have been looking at the 50mm 1.8 II / 50mm 1.4 / Tamron or Canon 60mm macro / 85mm 1.8.

At this point, I think I'm actually just leaning towards the 50 1.8... The money left over may be put towards something else (flash unit, etc).
My current setup:
Canon 500d/T1i
Canon 17-40mm
Canon 18-55mm
Canon 55-250mm

Really looking forward to any input/experiences! This forum has been really helpful.

The 85 / 1.8 was my most used when I used crop. While not all low light pics, you get the idea:

Canon 20D + 85 / 1.8 @ f / 1.8, 1/125, ISO 800

Canon 20D + 85 / 1.8 @ f / 1.8, 1/640, ISO 100

Canon 20D + 85 / 1.8 @ f / 1.8, 1/400, ISO 1600

Canon 20D + 85 / 1.8 @ f / 1.8, 1/250, ISO 400

Canon 20D + 85 / 1.8 @ f / 1.8, 1/800, ISO 100

Canon 20D + 85 / 1.8 @ f / 1.8, 1/320, ISO 400

Canon 20D + 85 / 1.8 @ f / 1.8, 1/125, ISO 200

Canon 20D + 85 / 1.8 @ f / 1.8, 1/60, ISO 3200

Canon 20D + 85 / 1.8 @ f / 1.8, 1/250, ISO 100

Canon 20D + 85 / 1.8 @ f / 1.8, 1/800, ISO 100

Canon 20D + 85 / 1.8 @ f / 1.8, 1/640, ISO 100

Canon 20D + 85 / 1.8 @ f / 1.8, 1/800, ISO 100

Canon 20D + 85 / 1.8 @ f / 1.8, 1/250, ISO 100

Canon 20D + 85 / 1.8 @ f / 1.8, 1/320, ISO 3200

And, while not a portrait, but what the hell, eh? One of my favorites:

Canon 20D + 85 / 1.8 @ f / 1.8, 1/100, ISO 200
