To put this in context, the 70-200 f/4L IS is so much sharper than the 55-250 that you can crop down to the equivalent of 225mm at the same resolution that the 55-250 delivers (esp. on its long end). Therefore, given the extra croppability of the 70-200 f/4, you really shouldn't consider the 55-250 to be any longer in practice than the 70-200.

Honestly, there is seriously no free lunch on this one. The 70-200 f/4L (IS or no) is an incredible lens for the money. As mentioned above the new Tamron 70-300 VC is the only thing in the middle. The Tamron 70-300 VC's IQ seems to be good, but the 70-200 f/4L's IQ is really just magical. I wouldn't give it up unless I really needed to.

The 55-250 is a good lens, but you shouldn't think of it as having more reach than the 70-200 or of it out-performing it in any way.
