One other consideration is that most of the time, we try not to shoot portraits or casuals of people with a wide angle lens. I think you have to ask yourself where you are going to take most of the pictures and from what distance. Although having the wide range inside of the 17-55 is very nice, the distortion at a wide setting tends to rule out the lower mm settings. Ideally, a portrait lens is roughly 60-120 which on a crop 1.6 lens would be 37-75 mm.

But it all depends on your needs, how close you'll be to the grandkids, etc. I have used the 17-55 on my grandkids a LOT!
