I’ve always made my own prints, even after switching mostly to color in the mid-70s. Having a print made commercially that looked exactly as I envisioned wasn’t even close to being cost-effective, even though consumer-grade prints did cost less than I could make one for. Any cost analysis should take the immediacy and quality of the final product into account. Of course, expectations also play a role.
