Shooting Christmas Trees (w/ lights) - advice?

I'm shooting A LOT of Christmas trees for a client. I've shot a few in my studio using mostly ambient/continuous softbox light, and he seems to be happy with them, as they show both detail in the tree as well as the brightness of the lights. However I'm not totally satisfied on a personal level. I can't get any success using actual flash - the lights on the tree are always indistinguishable. Any idea on getting good looking natural shots which highlight the lights on the tree?

Thanks!
