And this is supposed to be better than crop mode for WA photography which is wat I asked for?

Yes

Have you ever tried a UWA lens with a TC? It isn't pretty, IME. Maybe there's a reason that TC manufacturers don't recommend using them with lenses shorter than 50mm to 100mm.

I've used a sigma 18-125 at 18 on a 5D with a 1.4x TC. It's OK.

These show the centre and edge of 18-125 (at 18) 100% 'native' on a 350D, cropped to the framing and resampled to the same display size on a 5D (it will mount and operate OK on a 5D) and with a Kenko 1.4x TC on the 5D, with the slight extra crop to bring it to 1.5x.

The reason for the constraint on the FL is to do with the position of the exit pupil, which the TC is designed to work with, with the normal TC being designed to fit with a distant exit pupil. Most modern digital lenses have that distant exit pupil, even if they are UWA.
