I've met many FF photogs who were happy with the 85mm for portraiture. Myself, I started with a 135mm Nikkor back when that was considered the standard length for portraiture. Eventually, I settled on a Nikkor 105mm f/2.5 for its improved sharpness and contrast. Nowdays, I use the Canon 100mm f/2.8, although I would use the f/2.0 if I could justify owning two 100mm primes. The 85mm length has never worked well for me, although I sometimes use 50mm indoors in close quarters. To each their own!
