Still, for me it is a practical advantage that Nikon DX lenses can be mounted on the full frame bodies without TC. For example the DX 35/1.8 is excellent on full frame and only little cropping is required, especially if more square final aspect ratios such as 4:3 are desired.

The mountability of DX lenses on FX bodies, and your willingness to use them to the extent of the image circle is a different matter from crop mode. The EF-S concept, along with Canon's already short register gives potential advantage in size and quality for APS-C lenses. I'm not sure Canon has ever realised the potential advantage, but it is there, had they chosen to.
