Help - A77 + 70-400G/slow shutter - shake snag

Tonight I was trying a long shot of our local city. But the results I got was not what was expected...

The Camera was tripod mounted and operated by a wired remote, this was in fairly cold (5 degrees Centigrade), but there was no wind to shake the setup.

Over 70% of the images were well weird !

Here are a selection of the images - the duff ones have been cropped to 1/4 of the frame and then resampled to 50%. The 'good' is a small crop which was then also resampled to half size.

First the best one...

Now the weird ones...

However I have had two thoughts on why it may be:

  • I had switched the Sony 70-499G to Manual focus, but had not switched the A77 front dial to 'MF'. Does this matter, did I need to?

  • During the 3 second exposures I could hear a whirring from inside the camera - was this the steady shot working overtime? (can it be switched off on the A77?)

...but why were some of the shots okay?

Any ideas guys???
