had my 17-50 f2.8 about 5 years now and it is a great performer - very sharp and contrasty - it reminds me of Zeiss glass. Used it on my a700 with no problems - it out-resolves that sensor. I imagine it would be great with 16 or 24MP.

My concern with Tamron has always been CA. Of course the Sony 16-50 also has CA issues unless you have one of the new cameras that corrects for it (but maybe I will get one in the future). I think the Sigma 17-50 is the best of the bunch CA-wise due to the FLD glass. However, since I shoot RAW it really doesn't matter because I can correct for CA in postprocessing. But less CA is always better...

One advantage of Sigma or Tamron is their warranty: Sigma is 4 years (USA only) and Tamron is 6 years, compared to 1 year for Sony (boo)...

Cheers, Keith
