About Linux and DNG files

I also use Linux only. I quite like the JPEG files out from my GXR, but sometimes it's nice to have the flexibility of raw files in postprocessing.

With Linux, I use both RawTherapee and Showfoto, as well as Gimp, for postprocessing.

RawTherapee is very good at handling noise and sharpening, Showfoto has very flexible and easy to use filters, and Gimp is a good general-purpose tool for editing images.

As I wrote in my original post, the real advantage of DNG files is that you keep a kind of original "negative" of your digital photos. So if you ever change your mind about any of the JPEG settings you used to shoot a photo, you can go back and edit as much as you want.
But more often than not I am happy with the out-of-camera JPEGs from the GXR.
